Top 10 Schools Of Mumbai

Posted on: June 1, 2010

Here is the list and details of top 10/best schools of Mumbai. The list is indicative and not exhaustive.

  1. The Cathedral & John Connon School

Review: The Cathedral & John Connon School is a co-educational, private school located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is considered among the finest schools in India. According to the Education World-C fore Survey of Schools 2009, the school has been ranked second in the all India ranking of the best schools in India. It was ranked first in the Western region as the most respected school and ranked first in India for the Quality of Alumni.

The Cathedral and John Connon School is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious educational institutions in this country. For more than 145 years it has imparted the finest education through the medium of English, and has the tradition of upholding the most worthy values of the civilized world.

Although run by the Anglo Scottish Education Society, its spirit of tolerance and brotherhood of all mankind is the very essence of secular India.

The ICSE is a Board examination conducted at the end of Grade 10. Many students leave after this to join junior colleges in the city. The ISC, the Grade examination, is a more demanding course.

The School is affiliated to the following Boards in India and conducts public examinations in Std. 10 and Std. 12:

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ICSE): a two – year course covered in Classes 9 and 10.

The Indian School Certificate (ISC): a two – year syllabus covered in Classes 11 and 12.

The following programmes are also offered by the School:

The Advanced Placement Programme (AP) (of the College Board in the United States) for students of Stds. 11 and 12.

The P-SAT examination (of the College Board in the United States) for students of Stds. 9, 10 and 11. This examination is conducted by the school once a year

English is the medium of instruction. Hindi is taught as a second language and Marathi or Sanskrit are taught as third languages. Tests are conducted periodically and examinations are held at the end of every school term. The school’s students have consistently performed well at the I.C.S.E and I.S.C. examinations and the school has consistently maintained a 100% pass-rate.

College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Programme has been conducted in the school since June, 2004. Talented students, who would otherwise be disinterested in a mainstream classroom, are offered the chance to pursue accelerated learning (college-level) courses in a wide range of subjects including English, Calculus (AB & BC), Physics, Biology, Computers, World History, Chemistry and Economics. The school is also the only AP Examination Center in Western India.

For the I.S.C. course (consisting of grades 11 and 12) the school traditionally divided its student body into three streams: Commerce, Science, and the Humanities; however, as of 2008, this is no longer required and students now have the option of either choosing a particular stream or choosing subjects from different streams.

Academic standards are set high and grades have to be earned through sustained hard work. Students achieving distinctions (above 75% per term in Senior School) throughout the year become eligible for the Honours Prize for that year. Those who achieve fifteen points on a complicated scoring system, at any time after Grade 8, are awarded the Scholar’s Badge. This is a much-coveted honour and there are rarely more than three recipients in any given year.

Hi,

You might have some information corruption going on in your editing. The last time I checked St Marys was not located in Andheri! [East or West!] Mazagoan is more like the correct location.

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the correction. I realy appreciate that. Just corrected the address. The error is highly regretted. There seems to be many schools that go by this name when one does a Google check, hence the confusion.

Do also let us know if you feel any school is missing here.

Best Regards,

rustomje international school dahisar(w) is missing

The facebook page leads to the SSC group and the e-mail id is yet of St. Mary’s Andheri

Hi,

We’ll be relocating to mumbai from chennai next year. My son who is in the 10th std now would be requiring admission for 11th std next year in a state board school with French as second language . please help us locate a gud school near powai. we are not interested in a junior college. Since we are totally new to the mumbai education system, other reasonable suggestion are also welcome.

thanks,

Divya

You could find out what courses are offered at Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai. They have IB (I think). The concept of 10+1 and 10+2 in schools is rather unusual in Mumbai and very few schools offer the same.
Next option would be travelling minimum 30 mins away from there and doing it from Jamnabai Narsee School in Vile Parle.
A lot of students in Mumbai travel in the local trains/ buses to colleges (even 10+1 or 10+2) which are in the other part of the city- maybe in South Mumbai also.
Narsee Monjee College (Vile Parle)/ KC College (Churchgate)/ R A Podar (Matunga)/ St Xaviers/ Ruia are the best colleges I know in Mumbai having being born n brought up in that place.

hii..
i wanna ask a very simple question that how do u rate these schools? on what basis ur rating depends?
thanx

Dear Karuna

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I have written an entire post on schools ratings and assessment. Please chk the link here..https://parentingfundas.wordpress.com/2010/03/29/key-factors-to-keep-in-mind-for-choosing-a-school/
We try to keep above factors mentioned in the post ( in excel sheet) to rate them and also see the popularity based on school being mentioned on various educational forums, blogs people write and talking to parents ( in cities I know).
Hope it helps. Again, I am not a rating authority. The knowledge based is purely on my research and assessment.
Regards

Please provide me with the List of NIOS schools in Mumbai.

i think that out of most icse schools manrckji cooper has been one of the best i wonder why they did not put the name up and also st. anthonys has nothing but a number of illitered children who copy in the exams so goes with few of the other schools too

St. Mary’s ICSE and St. Mary’s SSC are separate schools.
Please correct the addresses, contact details and perhaps even the school information that might have got mixed up as a result of the confusion.
The alumni list of St. Mary’s ICSE also includes Freddie Mercury of Queen.

Thanks a lot for pointing it out! Made the changes..

very good site to get the information and updates of the schools.

We will be relocating to Mumbai from Indore and my two sons will pass 8th & 10th class respectively with 80% plus marks in Delhi Public School Indore. Advise with reasons and logic will be appreciated.

hi, could you please post the names of good ICSE schools in and around Kandivli w. i have gone through your website but did not come across any good schools in and around that area. also wanted to know whether Thakur International school is a good one. pl reply

This is with reference to the section on “Admission” for Bombay Scottish School (BSS) which has 2 Branches- Mahim and Powai.
As far as the Mahim Branch is concerned, be rest assured that there are no interviews of either the pupils or the parents. Ever since the existing Principal- Melanie Chandrasekhar has stepped in she has streamlined the Admissions procedure and made it transparent and user friendly.
Once the admissions notice is put up parents need to submit a self addressed envelope with the requisite postage stamps affixed on the same along with the details of the pupil (as sought my the notice displayed in the schools as well as the BSS website). Admission forms are sent to all. Duly completed forms must be dropped in the drop box in the school premises within the cut time. Result (either way) is communicated to each parent in writing to the correspondence address in the first week of May

Hi.. The contact number of Villa Theresa High School is not right. Can u please provide the right number???

I think you should include podar senior secondary high school as best 10 school.

hi !! can anyone tell me the name of good school near kandivali east, mumbai??

Hiii
M confused between RIMS international school at juhu and podar international school at santacruz. Can u let me knw which 1 is better for IGCSE course??

I believe that Podar is leagues ahead. What I have heard about RIMS from some parents is the low quality of teachers and the absolutely third rate infrastructure that they have. In face one parent was telling me that some of the teachers would not even qualify as class monitors, perhaps an exageratuon. But please do some additional background study on RIMS. Heard too many bad things about them…

Rasik Makwana is spot on. Don’t touch RIMS with a bargepole…forget entrusting your child’s future here. You can live with bad infrastructure but you will tear your hair out because of the inferior quality of the teaching staff. Some teachers are present in name only. There is no english teacher for the higher classes. In fact the school gets some of their past students to come in and take classes because these students’ knowledge is better than the teacher’s ! Principal will never reply to your emails and will also refuse to meet you in person.

Hi

Can anyone let me know how does St Mary’s for Boys (Mazgaon) an St Annee’s for girls (Fort) compare with G D Somani (co-ed).

I would also be interested in campion or cathedral and if i would have to relocate which is the furthest point where thye will have a bus pick up to qualify for the school.

Hi,

I am really confused between two schools for my daughter. First is Villa Theresa & the second one is Queens Mary School. Both are ICSE. But i really really really really confused as to opt for which one as both are great. As per your ratings of top 10 you have not mentioned Queens Mary School. I am a bit sceptical abvout the area of Queen Mary as well but still every one says its safe & good. No doubt Villa Theresa is also a great school but I am confused between the two. Pl HELP me in this regard & reply.

Waiting for ur reply..

Most of the information available on the internet strongly recommends QMS…I understand only Location is an issue rest all is perfect. VTS has a good location but is not better then QMS.

If you need any information you can reach me at since I also have a daughter and have done regressive analysis on both the school

We are planning to move to Mumbai from the US. My husband will be working in Sion (around Sion train station). We have a 4yr old girl and a 6yr old boy. Could you recommend good schools in the vicinity?

Thanks
ST

Pls give parents a scope to make informed decision if these rankings are supposed to be of any relevance. A more research based data would be of great help. Alumini is ceratinly not the only criteria for the school being ranked 1 2 3….
In Delhi, Mumbai /any Metro (India) rating of school if it has to be of any help to parents/ students, should be categorised / divided by
1. Location : Thane is on one end of Mumbai & South Mumbai, Fort the other. Same stands for Noida & Gurgaon.
2. Board : Comparisons btw ICSE, SSC, IB Schools should be categorised separately as each is completely different from the other.

Within these two heads it should include
I. . Fees: Comparisons/ Ratings should take into consideration
Deposit+ Actual Fees at school & any other expenses .
Followed By- – –
.II. Infrastructure –
a. inclusive of open area for sports ( all schools claim to have sports activities although they have minimal or no open space)
b. Well ventilated classrooms where each child has a seat with enough elbow room,
III. Student – Teacher Ratio OR Number of Students per class
( this is the worst scenario in Indian schools 40-60 kids crammed in a class with just one teacher)
IV. . Overall Qualified teacher ratio- Shortage of staff in recent years has made the schools accept even undergraduate untrained teachers/ staff at High school level.
V. Hygiene-
Another sickening & overlooked feature of most Indian Schools.
ManyIndian schools have just a few toilets ( at times just 4-8) completely spaced out whereas the students could be 2000+. Cleanliness cannot be expected or mintained with so many users.
VI. Student- Staff Safety- Clearly marked Exits, Wide staircases are a must as most schools are now becoming multi-storied .
In case of fire or any similar situation this could lead to a stampede with no proper exits ( Remember Uphaar Cinema, Delhi)

I have filled up a nursery admission form in Arya Vidya mandir, Juhu however the school does not publish the list of the shortlisted kids. I am not sure if my kid is shortlisted or not since they call up only those kids who are selected, but they have not provided a precise timeline by which they finish the proceudre. Any idea what is the admission critirea of this school ?

Please pray for me. Plssssssssssssss

Hi,
Anyone could suggest about Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, Juhu.
What will be the better decission getting your kid into AVM School Juhu or Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School, Juhu.
I know AVM will be good choice but if my kid saves 90 mins commuting to and fro should i prefer Bhaktivedanta School.
Please let me know your views.

hey..mmm, currently my 3 year ols child is goint to MET-Rishikul vidhyalaya – Bandra, but due to some internal managment issues, we want to shift him to nearby school from goreagaon to Borivalli. after some reasearch, we have shortlisted Dr Pillai Global Academy and Ajmera Global international school.pls suggest us the best or any additional school names

Hi Shilpa, I’m planning to admit my kids this year in MET Rishikul Vidyalaya, but reading your blog, I get confused. Will u plz elaborate what kind of internal management problem.

I wonder how Jamnabai Narsee in Juhu is nor featured in the top ten schools. It usually gets something like the 6th or 7th place in most ratings and St. Anthony’s has never features at all!

I wondered about that myself. Makes me consider that the blog author probably has a bias of her own. It’s not uncommon.

Hi,
we are relocating to Mumbai from Hongkong ,can you please recommend some IB schools for admissions.and if you could specify their ranking.
Thank you.

I completely agree with you, I was actually wondering the same thing about Jamnabai’s notable absence. Makes me think that the blog author has a bias of her own.

The survey is based on Hindustan Times review and completely unbaised as I do not live in Mumbai. Its what Internet Search told. thanks.

hello,
relocating from Delhi to Mumbai and have to choose between Ryan International Goregaon and Podar World School Santacruz (Jumbo kids) which one is better? my kid is 3.5 yrs old. grateful 🙂

Hi Pooja …derz no comparison between Ryan & podar as podar iz d best school …

The fee structure if displayed would be more helpful..

How about a fantastic new upcoming branch of the Ryan group tucked away in a bylane of Lokhandwala Complex? – Ryan Global School. It offers excellent student-teacher ratio, air-conditioned technology driven classrooms, value-based all-round education, caring teachers and a myriad of activities to take part in throughout the session. It offers IB curriculum upto Grade 5 followed by Cambridge Checkpoint – Grades 6-8 and IGCSE, AS and A Levels thereafter at a decent fee structure. Do check this out and bet you won’t be disappointed. http://www.ryanglobalschools.com/contact.php

No.Its the worst school ever “Ryan global school”
It purely tries to propagate christianity without respect for other religions , its teachers are harrassed and they keep changing almost every year. Its basically a show business type of a school.Parents are treated rudely.
Think twice and dont go by the looks of tge school please.

I am desperate to find out the school terms in Mumbai as, need to visit a school in Byculla. I do not want to come when the school is shut for holidays. Would you be so kind as to forward the term dates? I need to come either before or after Diwali. Thank you. Maddy

Hi ,
Can u please let me know if my son is born in the month of jan 2010,whats the elegibility criteria to get admissions in LKG in Bombay Scottish,AVM and dirubhai ambani .and when do we need to approach them for admissions.Tks

I have shifted my daughter from ICSE to SSC in grade 1 because the ICSE school was very far away. How is J. b. Vachha School in Dadar East

Hi..my daughter is 2 years old now. am looking forward to putting her in a good school next year. i am a resident of wadala east. i was interested in arya vidyamandir.. can you let me know what is the cut off age for admission to nursery and when do they issue admission forms ? Also would like your advise on other icse medium schools near wadala.

Hi,

I am relocating to Mumbai and looking for a school for my son (Jan 2008 born). How would you compare between Jamnabai Narsee, Podar International and Arya Vidya Mandir? He has studied in a montessori school for last 1.5 years. Also, how would you compare RBK International Academy in Chembur against these (leaving the curriculum as I understand the difference between IB and ICSE).

Thanks,
AKS

I have heard about the awful accident that occurred on a school trip at cathedral school in Mumbai and am appalled that there were only about 8 teachers to 160 students on the trip and that the kids were allowed to get off on the highway and cross the road. For a reknowned fee paying school that is disgraceful, the teachers on duty should have held that childs hand and protected her from oncoming traffic with their own bodies that is their duty when responsible for others children. A poor hapless child is now in a coma with possible damage to the brain and the lives of her and all her family have been devadtated overnight. I hope and pray she comes out of it without damage or the school will really have to pay and they should pay for their negligence by taking maximum steps to aid the recovery of the child whether it is paying for the medical costs or whatever. I will never recommend this school it has fallen totally out of my esteem and others ought to be aware of this tragedy and help the family take some action whem the time is right.

Nice article i believe Your child will benefit the most if you take an active role in his education and by taking admission in top school. Collecting vital information, visiting schools, observing classes and talking to key people in schools will help you in your quest for the best possible education for your child.

myself wife and son (5 years, Oct 2007 born), currently staying in Goregaon West are planning to shift to Andheri East. please advise a GOOD ICSE or CBSE school. my son will be moving to 1st standard.

Anurag, you can look at Rajhans Vidyalaya at andheri west ( cbse) on the bhavan’s college campus…it has a huge playground and hordes of sports activities…..in fact you could also look at “tridha” in andheri east, which follows holistic education…( not icse or cbse )

Your articles content is so good for the readers. I will share your blog to other people. Thank you for sharing this information with us. Keep sharing it.

Podar School at Santacruz is excellent. Their School bus plies great distances both in the east and west.

Could you suggest some good ICSE/CBSE schools in Santacruz West other than Podar? Im currently in class 10 and want to take up Science stream in class 11 in a good school in Mumbai. An early reply would be appreciated!

Dear Parents, I suggest Podar at Powai, CBSE which is upto 6th + 11th & 12th, as very close to areas like Hiranandani, Lake Homes, Nahar, Raheja Vihar, Andheri east, Kanjur marg, etc. Kids don’t have to travel in trains/ buses in the traffic of mumbai, which will take almost half day of traveling, thus getting more time for self studies & concentration.

want to know about pawar public school – bhandup

hi,

my son is studying in DY patil International school in nerul since pre nursery since they started the school in the university campus. Also we stay just next door to DPS nerul who’s admissions are open now. i’m a bit confused between both schools, although my son enjoys his current school, dps reputation is working on our minds. I intend to join St. Marys ICSE school Koparkhairane, I needed to know whether it is a branch of same school in Mazagaon and if so is it as good a school as the one on Mazagaon?

Hi, I have a daughter aged 2 and intend to apply for Bombay Scottish. I stay at Andheri and hence I am in a fix whether to opt for BSS, Mahim or Powai. By word of mouth I have heard that BSS mahim is much more preferred than Powai. I am keen to know the reason behind this is it the faculty or is it just that Maihm is the Parent Institution hence the preference.
