scratching me. He has got his 7 in one and corolla vaccine but the anti rabies one wld be given only when he is 3 mnths old ( in a few days). Should i be bothered about him biting and scratching me. He is very playful and I wld hve to keep him in leash all the time if i want to avoid his bites. They are small bites but I was just a little worried if this would harm my baby in ANY way. Or am i thinking a bit too much? Any one facing same prob? Any advice?

think you’ll be ok but I also think it’s time to start training your pup. It’s time that he learns what is ok to chew (his toys, his food, his bones) and what is NOT ok to chew (you, your toys, your furniture). Small bites will become big bites when the small dog becomes a big dog. Dogs do not automatically learn people behaviors. If we want them to live with us then we have to teach them manners. Believe me it’s going to be a lot easier now than when he’s had 7 months of bad habits under his collar.

If he starts mouthing you, give him a stern no. Use your hand to cover his mouth and make serious eye contact. When he stops, remove your hand from his snout and make your voice sweet saying good boy and other praise. Repeat EVERY time he mouths you. After a day or two, use replacement therapy. He mouths you, you tell him no, he stops, you praise him. Then you give him something he CAN chew on. When he takes it, praise him more. When he chews on it, get excited, give him lots and lots of praise. Be consistent. He will stop. Give him lots of rawhides and other things to chew on, and encourage him to chew on “his” toys. And the great news is he won’t mouth your baby.

As for the scratching, clip his nails and take him for long walks on the pavement to sand them down.

You won’t regret it if you spend the time now to teach your dog the manners he’ll need to be welcome in your family his whole life. Puppies are so cute but when they still act like puppies when they’re BIG dogs they end up at the shelter because they don’t fit in with the family anymore. It’s not their fault, it’s just that no one bothered to teach them manners, or they waited too long to try.

Good luck with your puppy preschool! 🙂
